Just two months ago when the young forward found himself on the Sunderland turf, looking confused as the Villa manager berated him for failing to anticipate a through-ball. At that point, as Villa went six without a win, it wasn't clear whether Rogers' form were a sign or a cause for the side's wider issues.
“Following Rogers' second strike… Emery discarded his jacket, extended his arms, and let out a triumphant roar.”
In the latest match, however, the manager's outburst was entirely much more joyous. When the England international swept in his brace-sealing goal to reinstate his side's advantage, the boss ripped off his jacket, threw his arms wide and roared. The Birmingham club marched on to a tenth straight victory and after failing to win any of their first six fixtures, now sit a mere three points off table-toppers Arsenal.
Is Aston Villa Legitimate Challengers?
This is a rather hard query to resolve. History, the traditional standing of this institution, indicates otherwise. Additionally, their performances haven't been wholly dominant during this run, while the positive results have piled up.
As per the data, twice all season have Villa registered an expected goals figure significantly higher than their opponents. For a team who have strung together ten consecutive victories, the Villans look curiously susceptible – yet right now the fine lines are swinging for them.
The Rogers Recipe
The prevailing tactic looks like to engage in a shootout with the opposition and wait for their talisman to bail them out with two crisp finishes. This was the case against Leeds, it happened against West Ham, and it happened when facing United.
Rogers' first goal originated from a brilliant finish, curled right inside the goal frame from the corner of the box. The follow-up goal was essentially a slight scruffier version of his first as he seized on a setup by his strike partner.
“Much like Robben with his left, Rogers’ right foot has become a known threat that remains brutally unstoppable, regardless of anticipation.”
How Long Can This Continue?
Common sense dictates no. Against United, the opposition registered a greater number of attempts and more direct attempts. The team has triumphed in eight consecutive games by the narrowest of margins. The defence has been breached in all except one of those matches.
A reversion to average could be the most significant challenge the club will encounter as the season progresses. The forward, surely, cannot maintain blasting his shots into the net's top corner indefinitely.
A Case for Belief
Maybe there exists another reality whereby, rather than luck running out, the team's displays improve to justify the wins. Important figures might still rediscover their best form.
- Ollie Watkins might resume scoring again.
- Jadon Sancho could transform into the player he showed in Germany.
- The defensive duo are due to regain fitness, bolstering an occasionally vulnerable defensive unit.
Perhaps there is in that the seeds for a sustained push, however, it is improbable can persist in leaning entirely on one man.
Enjoying the Ride
Yet, this was unforeseen. It seemed improbable Aston Villa would occupy third at Christmas. And most definitely back in October, few could imagine the young forward as the year closed would be spearheading a title charge while looking like a crucial Three Lions star.
The current run should be enjoyed exactly since it seems so surreal. As the match-winner stood in front of the Villa faithful at the final whistle orchestrating the applause, it was clear to be relishing every moment. Which he fully merits. These runs of form are uncommon in the sport and must be appreciated.
