The future president of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.

The vote against the student leader reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the organization.

Disputed Comments

The controversy began after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to welcome the killing of the American conservative figure, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in Utah.

According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The student leader is also said to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.

Election Results

The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with outcomes revealed on Tuesday.

Society announcements showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while just over five hundred were against the motion.

The notice stated that the future president was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the society's regulations.

Procedural Disputes

Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "interference, threats, and inappropriate behavior" from several representatives.

In a statement, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been stopped because election administrators believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His statement unequivocally denied that any representative acting for George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The president-elect stated that significant concerns had been referred to the governing body and that he remained president-elect.

His comment added that he was "grateful and honored to have the support of significantly more than half of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".

Critics have argued that any decision to keep him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has prioritized politics over principles".

External Reactions

On Friday, Mikey McCoy presented an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message criticized the society of becoming a institution where "student leaders publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".

The communication indicated that if Mr Abaraonye were to keep his position, supporters would "personally contact every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".

The Oxford Union had previously condemned the student's comments after the activist's killing and stated that concerns submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The president-elect had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the union in May.
